Motor cars, four wheel drive jeeps and SUV pick-ups registered in private will be required to pay increased toll to use the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) with effect from July 1, 2008.
The new toll structure advertised by the Harbour Bridge states that the charge for motor cars will move to $100 while four wheel drive jeeps and SUVs will pay $200. The toll for other categories of vehicles will remain unchanged.
Commenting earlier in the week on the proposed increase, Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn said that the increase was necessary since the revenue being collected in toll by the bridge was insufficient to meet the cost of maintaining the structure.
Government has been subsidizing the maintenance cost of the Bridge and at present it is being rehabilitated at a cost of $555M.
According to DHB’s General Manager Rawlston Adams the rehabilitation will add another 10 years to the life of the bridge.
The last increase in rates for using the bridge occurred on June 1, 1998.
