Kaieteur News – Two things yuh know yuh must have in any Guyanese Easter: kites and cross buns. Well, me nah know ’bout y’all, but dis year cross bun prices got people bussin’ sweat more than dem kites in de Seawall breeze. It’s like dem sellers suddenly find deh self sittin’ on a gold mine, chargin’ fuh dem cross buns like deh sprinkle it wid de essence of deh last supper or summtin’.
Some places askin’ fuh $1,000 fuh a lil’ bag of five cross buns, like dem buns come wrapped in gold foil or got diamonds baked right in. Den yuh got dem oddas chargin’ $2,000 fuh six buns like deh addin’ a secret ingredient straight from deh heavens. Me cyan help but wonderin’, wha’ dis cross bun got inside dat worth more dan me own two eyeballs?
But wah dem boys more concerned about is how dem poor people supposed to afford dem kinda prices? It’s like playin’ a cruel joke on deh people, nailin’ ’em to a cross of poverty with dem ridiculous prices.
We might have families huddlin’ ’round a single bun, slicin’ it up so fine yuh need a magnifyin’ glass to see deh crumbs. Easter used to be ’bout joy, celebration, and plenty eatin’, but now it lookin’ like a struggle just to get a lil’ taste of dem cross buns. So, as we approach Easter, let’s not forget deh real reason fuh deh season: not just dem buns, but deh spirit of ensuring everybody get a bite of an affordable cross bun. We can’t let dem cross bun prices crucify we wallets too! If it too expensive fuh yuh, dem bake yuh own!
