Fires have claimed the lives of four people for the year so far, while several persons have been injured, buildings have been destroyed, and families have been displaced.
Sometimes disaster can be avoided, and after investigations by the fire authorities, it has been found that some of these fires were as a result of carelessness and lack of supervision of minors.
Just recently, 48-year-old wheelchair user, Arlene Moses, died in her Freeman Street, East .La Penitence, Georgetown home.
Fire Chief, Marlon Gentle, said that he believed that the fire started in the kitchen while she was cooking.
Gentle said that Moses was using two kerosene stoves and due to her limited mobility, caused one of the stoves to fall.
West Ruimveldt handyman,56-year-old Christopher Bramble, called ‘Harry,’ also perished in a fire a month ago.
It was alleged that his partner, Jewel Coates, set their house on fire around midnight on September 10, last.
This publication was informed that Bramble and Coates were involved in an argument and Coates threatened to burn the house with him inside.
Neighbours who live in close proximately to the couple had reported that the woman locked the house from inside before setting it on fire.
The neighbours said that they rushed to render assistance and were able to rescue Coates whose clothing was at the time covered in blood.
She allegedly told the residents that she was alone at home and attempted to escape from the scene, but was prevented from leaving and was handed over to police.
It was reported that Coates might have attacked and stabbed Bramble before setting the house on fire. She received burns about her body and died a month later.
A Better Hope pensioner also lost his life in a fire a few months ago when his Lot 10 Bissoon Street, Better Hope, East Coast Demerara home was engulfed in flames.
Fazel Ally, 65, was home alone when neighbours saw his house on fire.
The fire is believed to have been caused by a stove that was left unattended.
Police were also told that Ally was in the habit of threatening to burn his home down whenever he was under the influence of alcohol.
