-reportedly linked to at least four robberies
Dominique Charles, who was recaptured on Wednesday following his escape from the Kitty Police Station, is likely to be charged with at least three armed robberies.
He is scheduled to appear in court today.
While a police release had stated that Charles is 17, police officials said that the suspect is 18.
Charles was detained on Sunday at the Kitty Police Station and was scheduled to be charged in connection with four armed robberies when he escaped.
He had reportedly given ranks at the station the name of a sibling who is a year younger.
A police official told Kaieteur News that because there are no lockups at the Kitty Station, Charles was shackled and placed on a bench.
The official said that CCTV footage at the station showed that a policeman had taken the suspect to the washroom.
It is believed that Charles secured a nail or other object while being taken to and from the washroom.
The security footage showed that the suspect ‘picked’ his shackles while the policeman was in another section of the station. The only other rank, a policewoman, was distracted by some civilians who had come to make a report.
Charles then escaped on a bicycle that was in the station compound.
Police recaptured him on Wednesday in Middle Road, West La Penitence, while he was in a hire car. He reportedly had an unloaded .40 Smith and Wesson pistol.
They also detained the 35-year-old driver, who resides in South Ruimveldt Park.
An investigation has since been launched into the circumstances surrounding Charles’s escape.
