Dear Editor,
I remember, and rather liked, the statement made in the 1950s by one of B.G’s British Governors that “Capital and Labour must go hand in hand”. In other words, each needs the other for a country to long survive.
In London, I worked both in the public service and in the financial centre, known as “The City of London”.
They both had pluses and minuses. Although “The City” was staffed by well-mannered people, mainly men, among whom I enjoyed working, I found the work uninteresting and therefore boring.
Capitalism reigned. In fact, my immediate boss was a member of the well-known chocolate family.
Then in my ‘closing years’, I worked with a giant-sized public corporation, which happened to be Union-dominated, having a closed shop policy, my grade being one of the few exempt from the closed shop condition of employment.
When ‘closed-shop’ colleagues found out that I was not a union member, they turned nasty – sniping, passing the word along, becoming obstructive.
I did not care for being treated like a child, being ordered to “down tools” and not being told why. Union behaviour can become spiteful and vindictive.
When privatisation took place, the power of the union was curbed, then finally crushed. Fighting for their own survival, the union eventually relinquished its strangle hold. My own opinion would be that of B.G.’s former Governor – Capital and Labour must go hand-in-hand if a country is to be calm and survive.
