Handling and identifying children with special needs in schools will be much better if mainstream teachers are equipped with the necessary skills.
Keeping this in mind, School of Nations sent three of its teachers on a week of intensive training in Special Education at Brain Rx in Colorado Springs in the United States of America last month. The teachers were identified as Balinda Beckles, Florence Harris-Lewis and Karen Thomas-Luckhoo.

The programme focused on the seven cognitive skills, including auditory processing, visual processing, long and short-term memory, processing speed, attention, logic and reasoning.
This type of skill is said to be the core brain skills that make up the IQ and determine how well persons read, learn, reason, remember and pay attention.
Brain Rx brain training programmes consist of intense mental exercises that sharpen the core skills the brain uses to think, learn, read, reason and pay attention.
Facilitators of the programmes do not use the traditional teaching method, instead, they use a blend of personal brain training (during which students work one-on-one with their own brain coach) and digital brain training (done on a computer).
Both of these approaches will be used at School of the Nations, the Brain Rx centre in Guyana. This type of training sharpens the brain skills being used in schools, at work, and in everyday life.
To begin the training, the Gibson Test of Brain Skills is done to identify each student’s unique cognitive skill strengths and weaknesses.
After training, the student’s cognitive skills are once again tested. This final test allows the facilitator to scientifically measure improvements in brain performance.
The programme is structured to attract children and adults who are struggling academically or have been diagnosed with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other challenges that are related to the brain. It can also help those who are in fact doing very well, but are interested in developing their intellectual skills.
