26-Mile walk from Mahaica at mid-night on May 24 organised
By Sean Devers
In 1997 Guyanese William France became the first Amputee to ever compete in the Boston Marathon in the USA before forming the William France Differently Abled Athletics Club on August 12 of the next year.
Since then the President of his club has had many achievements including being the only Amputee to receive two National Awards and has participated in 21 Marathons, 17 of them overseas.
The now retired 59-year-old France has also had to seek donations for his trips overseas on the Demerara Harbor Bridge and the East Coast Railway Embankment. He says he represents Guyana on these trips, adding there is no money involved when he is successful in such events.
The one-legged Walker is coming out of retirement on May 24 when he and five other Amputees and two females (Indi Ramnauth & Yvonne DeAbreu) who are in Wheel Chairs will participate in a 26-mile walk from Mahaica to the Independence Arch in Brickdam Georgetown starting at mid-night. The seven and a half hour walk is expected to conclude just after 07:30hrs on May 25.
“We (the club) want to show in our 50th Independence Anniversary that people with disabilities can make a meaningful contribution to this beautiful Nation and we have invited President David Granger, the Prime Minister, the Director of Sports and the opposition leader Dr Bharat Jagdeo to walk the last mile with us,” France informed.
France thanked the Guyana Police Force for the support his club has received during their events over the years and disclosed that this special walk is open to anyone who wishes to join.
“This is not a race just a walk to raise awareness of disabled persons. We are set to warm up for the walk when we host a 13-mile walk from Cotton-Field to Queenstown on the Essequibo Coast from 06:00hrs on May 14,” informed the France who hails from Essequibo.
Among the sponsors on board for the May 24 event are DDL, Ramchand Auto Sales, Rays Auto Sales, DeSilva’s Optical, Guy oil, Humphrey’s Bakery and West Indies Sports Complex.
