In an effort to keep senior football alive in Berbice, and with no sponsor, the Berbice Football Association (BFA) with its members agreed to organize a league in a self-funding manner, where the teams cover the cost. In order to reduce costs, there will be three leagues; the West Berbice League, the New Amsterdam League & the Corentyne League. The winners of each league will meet in a round robin play-off to determine the overall Berbice Champion.
Action in the West Berbice League 2016 started last Saturday 9th April with Mahaicony F.C., newcomer to the BFA, taking on the newly-reformed Paradise Invaders FC at the Mahaicony Sports Ground. Paradise Invaders FC won the game 2 – 0 with goals from Vaughn Williams (41min) & Javell Fraser (64min).
The action continued on Sunday 10th April at the Rosignol Ground, aka Dead Valley, where home team, Rosignol United FC took on the other newcomer to the BFA, Hopetown United Rangers FC. The spirited newcomers were no real match for the once champion of Berbice. Rosignol United FC won the game 6 – 1 with goals from Shane Gangoo (8 & 17min), Marlon Nicholson (25 & 38min), Cornell Taylor (48mim) and Gladston Green (penalty) (70min).
Action continues today at Mahaicony Sports Ground from 16:00hrs. Mahaicony FC play Hopetown United Rangers FC.
Tomorrow at Rosignol Ground from 16:00hrs Rosignol United FC tackle Paradise Invaders FC. Admission at the gates is only$500. More information on the tournament can be accessed by contacting Mr. Keith Ojeer – President, Berbice Football Association (617-8496).
