Charity, Essequibo Coast businessman and President of the resuscitated Essequibo Chamber of Commerce
(ECC), Deleep Singh believes that the organisation can be the ideal catalyst to facilitate growth for Essequibo’s flagging business and agriculture sectors.
“The Chamber will serve to fuel and facilitate growth within our business and agriculture sector, we will be that voice,” Singh said.
He reasoned that Essequibo is not all about rice. Business he added, has suffered a downturn because of the challenges that the rice industry continues to experience since rice is the backbone of Essequibo’s main economy.
“Rice cannot stand alone”, Singh argued, adding that farmers need to be educated about the benefits they can reap through diversification.
“Coconut is the next big thing after rice, it can incur between 30-40 B dollars in the next year alone.”
Pomeroon has many acres of fertile lands but the input of the government is critical, especially in transforming Charity as a secondary town to augur the effective flow of river transport to easily utilise that port as a trans-shipment point.
Singh believes that in order for businesses within the Region to attain growth, “unity” must be activated among residents, especially in the area of having common goals and being able to work together.
“One of our worst things is for Guyana to lose our farmers.”
Singh indicated that it is of much importance that Essequibians change their culture by utilising all of their resources.
