Three persons were brought before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Thursday and ordered to pay fines and perform community service after they were charged with being in possession of narcotics.
The convicted are all residents of Kitty, Georgetown. Winston Crawford, 37, a food vendor of 72 Sandy Babb Street, Kitty admitted that he had five grams of cannabis in his possession. Nicola Augustus, 42, conceded that she had four grams of the substance in her possession and Anthony Taite, 26, confessed that he had a gram of the illicit substance in his possession.
They were busted with the drug on Sandy Babb Street, Kitty on December 2.
Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones, told the Court that on the day in question, ranks from the narcotics branch of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) went to Lot 72 Sandy Babb Street, Kitty and conducted a search on the persons.
The drugs were found in their possession and they were arrested and charged. When asked why they were in possession of the drugs, they told the Magistrate that they use the substance for leisure.
Crawford was sentenced to a fine of $15,000 along with six weeks of community service. Taite was fined $5000 and ordered to perform six weeks of community service, while Augustus was fined $12,000 and ordered to perform five weeks of community service.
