…29 in jail awaiting trial
The February criminal session has ended. The June 2015 session should start today. There are
29 awaiting trial—26 are listed for murder, one of them incarcerated since 2008
The February 2015 criminal sessions of the Berbice Assizes closed last Thursday with Justice Franklyn Holder presiding.
At the jail delivery presented by Asst Superintendent of Prisons, Paul James, said that of the 29 awaiting trial, 26 are listed for murder. The others are for sexual penetration. They all requested an early trial.
Three of the murder accused including, Omar Bacchus, Bheem Evans and Charles Goodluck, who at 64 is the oldest committed to prison have decided to plead guilty when the June session begins.
The Prison officer reported that five had initially decided to plead, but two subsequently recanted. There are three 17 year olds namely, Warmish Ramballe, Jainarine Shivnarine, and Ryan Persaud. Omar Bacchus is the longest committed prisoner, having been admitted on September 5, 2008.
In the meanwhile the June session of the Berbice High Court is expected to open today with the traditional ceremonial march past and inspection of the ranks in front of the Berbice High Court, Esplanade Road New Amsterdam.
Justice Navendra Singh is expected to preside over the June session of the Berbice criminal assizes.
