While employees of the Anna Regina Town Council remain on strike, Local Government and Regional Development Minister, Norman Whittaker, has disclosed that the Anna Regina Town Council would be able to access $11.5M, this year.
This money would be further diverted toward upgrading roads, desilting trenches, reinforcing culverts and procuring a Mini-excavator.
Disgruntled workers who are protesting an increase in salaries retroactive to 2012 have been striking for over two weeks. The strike continues into this new week. Striking workers are being owed some $1.7M.
No agreement has since been met by the Council management and the Local Government Ministry to pay workers.
“More resources, more work.” Whittaker added that in previous years, the Municipality received $9M. He said that the $11.5M to which the municipality would have access in 2015 was based on the performance in the previous year.
Whittaker said that through resources that were made by Central Government, all of the municipalities were able to access resources in order to do more work.
“The municipalities have the capacity to garner their resources.”
Whittaker said that the Anna Regina municipality has collected sufficient resources and still have the ability to do even more.
He said that his Ministry has since embarked on special programmes which were successful in garnering foreign aids which have been used to enhance markets.
