GFA/Stag Beer 2014 Futsal Football tournament…
All roads lead to the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) tonight for a potentially explosive night of football action as the curtains come down on the GFA/Stag Beer 2014 Futsal Football tournament. Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United FC and Rhythm Squad FC will go head to head in a match that promises to be electrifying.
Alpha, a formidable team, are unofficially the favourites and from all appearances enter tonight’s game bursting with confidence. Popularly known by the sobriquet ‘The Hammer,’ the team led by seasoned coach, Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover has had a fairytale sojourn in the tournament defeating all comers. Beacons were the first to feel their wrath and succumbed 4-1 before Alpha dished out a 13-1 drubbing to Renaissance. The other teams to suffer humiliating defeats to Alpha were GDF (5-1), Fruta Conquerors (6-2) and Western Tigers (5-1).
Dover said that tonight’s match will be a juicy encounter and he intends to come out victorious. Notwithstanding, he’s cognizant of his opponent’s ability and said that he will not be caught napping. “Alpha played really well in this tournament and it’s no surprise that we are entering the finals as the favourites but Rhythm Squad has played really well and we will not take them lightly,” pronounced Dover when asked to predict a winner.
Naturally, he will be placing great responsibility on his strike force of Dwight Peters, Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant, Aldair Paredes and the man between the uprights, Ronson Williams among others.
Kavin Pearce, Dover’s opposite number on the Rhythm Squad unit, is just as confident and feels that his boys could pull it off once they remain focused and employ the tactical moves learned during training sessions. Sceyon Hope has proven his worth and much responsibility will be placed on his shoulders in tonight’s game.
Teon Jones has also been on fire and Pearce regards him as his ace in the hole. Include the versatile Amos Ramsay and his dependable cousin, Steffon, and even the uninitiated would admit that Rhythm Squad is in with a shout. “I believe the teams are evenly balanced and in the end it will depend on which makes fewer mistakes and is tactically stronger,” declared Pearce. Those evaluations have set the scenario for a no holds barred encounter tonight and football fans should go out for a night of unbridled action. . Apart from bragging rights the winner carts off $400,000 with the loser pocketing half that amount.
One match earlier, Santos FC and Western Tigers will lock horns in the third place playoff in another potentially fiery encounter that nets the winner $125,000 with the losers getting $75,000.
But even before those matches are contested, fans will be treated to several others as the organizers attempt to make the night’s activities as memorable as can be.
There is the highly anticipated duel between the media team and the referees. The former squad prevailed with a 4-1 drubbing of the latter earlier in the tournament and the referees will be out to reverse their fortunes. There will also be a match between the East All Stars against the West All Stars while Ansa McAl and Wartsila clash in a return game. Sparta Domino team will also oppose Phantom Domino team for bragging rights while a GT Masters team oppose their counterparts of Brazil to cap off the night of activities.
Popular comedian, Jumbie Jones will also provide entertainment for patrons when the action gets underway at 18:30hrs. (Michael Benjamin)
