A 60-year-old carpenter was killed on the spot around 17.00 hrs yesterday at Pearl, East Bank Demerara, after he was crushed by a lumber-laden truck that was being driven by an alleged drunk driver.
Ramdolar Dhanraj, 60, of Lot 8, Pearl, East Bank Demerara, was riding on the East Bank Demerara Public Road when he was struck from behind.
His son, Mahendra Dhanraj, told Kaieteur News that his father was heading for the adjoining community of Sara Johanna, East Bank Demerara, to meet some of his workers, when misfortune struck.
Deep tyre tracks on the eastern parapet indicated that the driver lost control about 100 meters from where Dhanraj was riding before ramming into him.
The son, Mahendra Dhanraj, said that the driver and porter appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. However, Kaieteur News understands that traffic ranks who arrived at the scene did not have breathalyzer kits.
One man told Kaieteur News that the driver and other truckers were consuming alcohol at a Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara spot just a few minutes before the accident occurred.
The driver and porter were detained at the Timehri Police Station.
