After much hype and expectation the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) successfully
hosted its inaugural Super League tournament last weekend at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
Some preliminary matches were played on Saturday featuring Demerara’s male teams, Achievers and GDF and two female teams, Vanguard and GDF. On Sunday the remainder of the competition continued which saw Berbice teams Port Mourant Training Centre (PMTC) and Jaguars in contention.
Following grueling matches between the male teams, Achievers and PMTC earned the right to face off in the final.
The much anticipated match was a marathon five setter with the first two sets going in favor of PMTC 25-21,25-23 but Achievers are known for their determination and vibrancy and would not give up easy even when it seems to be going out of their reach.
They {Achievers} clawed their way back and in the end prevailed as they wrapped up the final three sets 25-19, 25-22, 15-10. In the female showdown, the experienced GDF unit overpowered the up and coming Vanguard line-up to win 26-24, 11-25, 25-21, 18-25, 11-15.
