…was transporting bitten aunt to hospital
A young man, Merve Melville, 20, of 289 Number Eight Village, West Coast Berbice, who was at the time acting as a good Samaritan, died on Monday in the Georgetown Public Hospital after the car he was driving crashed at Number Nine Village, West Coast Berbice.
The young man at the time, was trying to take his injured aunt to the Fort Wellington Hospital after she was stung by some Africanised bees, not far from her residence.
About 06:10 hrs on Sunday the woman, Ingrid Melville, had gone to a house which the family owns not too far away, to sweep the yard.
As she was sweeping she was attacked by the bees and eventually collapsed.
An alarm was raised and Merve and others came to Ingrid Melville’s assistance. Merve a provisional driver, and the woman’s sister, Oslyn, placed her in Oslyn’s car PPP3869, to take her to the Fort Wellington Hospital.
In the vicinity of No 9 village, some of the bees that had entered the car and were still on Ingrid attacked Merve Melville. According to information the young man eventually lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a lamp post. He was severely injured and the car was badly damaged.
It is understood that the injured woman was able to escape and sought refuge in a nearby trench. Her other sister also escaped from the vehicle. Merve, it is understood, was pinned in the vehicle.
The injured man was taken out and rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital in a critical and unconscious state, before being transferred to the New Amsterdam hospital. He was eventually further transferred to the Georgetown Hospital where he was admitted for emergency surgery in a critical condition.
The man who had suffered serious internal injuries died around midnight on Sunday without regaining consciousness.
When Kaieteur News visited the residence the distraught mother was not in a position to speak to the media.
