The Ministry of Public Works has clarified statements made Tuesday which suggested that both Ogle and the Timehri airports are not meeting minimum standards.
The quote, attributed to Minister Robeson Benn, was from a Government Information Agency (GINA) release and reported on by both independent-owned Kaieteur News and Stabroek News.
While the GINA release suggested that the airports were below international requirements, the ministry said yesterday that this was far from the truth.
“Minister Benn told the 25 plus participants that a dispassionate review of the airports [CJIA and Ogle] security status indicates that “we are not meeting the minimum standards. We do not yet accorded with, mitigated to, the threats we are faced with…we need to take a hard look at ourselves.” What the Minister was really saying, the statement by Public Works said yesterday, was that he was making reference to his personal expectation of the security staff to raise the standard of service delivered to the passengers and users of the airports.
“Minister Benn was challenging participants to be more industrious when executing their duties, since passengers rely on them to be safe and secure.”
The Ministry stressed that since 2003, the Cheddi Jagan International Airport has been successfully audited by the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) on an annual basis. Likewise, the Ogle International Airport is also audited by the GCAA for compliance with international standards on an annual basis.
The Ministry was making an address Tuesday to a joint workshop hosted by the GCAA and the US Transportation Security Administration on security.
The “minimum standards” story yesterday worried stakeholders as it could have implications for planes originating from Guyana and landing elsewhere.
