“A government that offers lucrative incentives for foreigners to mine our non-renewable resources and deny corresponding treatment to locals is participating in acts of undermining the nation’s sovereignty.”
This is according to the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC), which yesterday by way of a public missive expressed its concern over threats to Guyana’s sovereignty.
The GTUC noted that while the Constitution guarantees the benefits of the nation’s resources and the right to work to all, the citizenry continues to belatedly hear reports of the nation’s natural resources being dispensed to foreigners with haste, most times done in secret deals and with generous concessions.
The GTUC is of the opinion that a government that disregards its responsibility to ensure its people engage in business activities that would generate and retain wealth in its country, is acting inimical to the interest of its people.
“This nation is not only badly served by poor executive decision-making and their preference for foreigners, but continues to be inflicted with the violations of our laws and transgression of our rights by foreigners with the complicity of an Administration that feels beholden to them. This threatens who we are as a people and the values we hold dear.”
GTUC is adamant that Guyana needs an Investment and Job Policy that will protect its people and their resources and offer incentive to local businesses and ensure its labour force is constructively involved.
“The affliction of high unemployment and forced migration can be stemmed through these avenues…Skills shortage can also be addressed through Executive policies in partnership with stakeholders to ensure our workforce has a competitive edge.”
According to GTUC, the wealth of this nation and its non-renewable resources must first and foremost benefit its indigenous population.
“The legislature is urged to examine deficiencies in the system and seek to close the gaps and mandate executive actions consistent with the people’s interest…While the GTUC supports the free movement of skills, cross border trade and investment, these activities must be conducted within clear cut guidelines that would ensure the preservation of our sovereignty.”
