The North Rupununi Football Sub Association’s male and female 2014 First Division Football Championships kicked off on Saturday 24th May 2014 at Kwatamang Sports Ground.
In the opening match of the tournament played in front of a large crowd, home male team Kwatamang F.C. had to overcome stiff resistance from tournament newcomers Crashwater F.C as a closely contested first half ended 0-0. However experience paid off in the second half as prolific Kwatamang marksman, Kensman Cambridge, registered a quick double in the 64th and 68th minutes to stun the Crashwater team. Ryan Donald of Kwatamang then rounded off the scoring with a strike in the 73rd as Kwatamang ended up comfortable winners by a 3-0 margin.
In the second match of the day Surama F.C female team took a shock lead over defending champions Annai United as a long range strike by Julia Captain beat the Annai custodian at the far post. However Jillian Hawker of Annai United took the fight out of Surama F.C with a double strike in the 56th and 68th minutes and Coleen Domingo completed the comeback as the defending champions eased to victory.
In the third match of the day a Josephine Daniels strike in the 31st minute and a Julene Donald effort in the 56th minute saw the veteran Kwatamang F.C female team comfortably defeating their youthful Bina Hill Institute counterparts. Despite having better opportunities in front of goal Bina Hill Institute could not take advantage and paid the price for their profligacy.
In the final match of the day, defending male champions Surama F.C overcame some resolute and determined defending by Wowetta Premier Conquerors to register a hard fought 4-2 victory. Victor Captain opened the scoring for Surama F.C by nodding in a close range header in the 30th minute.
Wowetta Premier Conquerors equalized in the 62nd minute after a fine solo run by Orien Francis ended with him slotting past the Surama F.C custodian. Paul James then put Surama F.C in front with a strike in the 75th minute but Wowetta Premier Conquerors quickly equalized in the 79th minute courtesy of a Dexter Torres strike.
Surama F.C’s superior passing skills and ball control finally paid off as veteran campaigner Orlando Allicock registered his first of the match with a trademark long range effort. Paul James grabbed his second of the match in the 85th minute as Surama F.C picked up their first points of the 2014 campaign.
The action continued yesterday at Annai Sports ground with Net Rockers male team of Massara Village taking on Basin F.C of Aranaputa Valley, while the second match saw Crashwater F.C male team battling Three Hills of Rupertee Village and in the lone female encounter Annai United came up against Net Rockers.
The feature match yesterday saw home team Annai United play the highly touted Splashing Stars of Yakarinta Village.
The North Rupununi First Division Football Championships is into its twelfth year and will see nine male teams and six female teams competing to be the 2014 football champions of North Rupununi. The tournament will run for nine weeks.
