A senior staff at a private school on West Coast Berbice who reported to the police that he was robbed of over $700,000, but had allegedly staged the entire scenario in an attempt to steal the money, has been charged.
The man, Glenroy Solomon, 27, of Golden Fleece Village, West Coast Berbice, an Administrative Assistant of the Little Treasure Private School of Lot 20-21 Golden Fleece, West Coast Berbice, is charged with giving false information to the police.
He appeared before Magistrate Shurdel Isaacs-Marcus in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on Friday and was granted bail in the sum of $20,000.
According to reports, on Thursday at Golden Fleece the man informed the police that around 01:45hrs on the day in question, he was robbed of $700,000. He reported that two unmasked identifiable men armed with small handguns broke into the building and held him at gunpoint, while ransacking the building and making good their escape with the money.
He reported that the money was in three parcels and the bandits made off with two.
The police responded promptly and visited the scene. A number of persons were questioned, but nothing unusual was reported by those questioned. Things looked unusual after nothing unusual was found.
Investigators became suspicious after the man began to fumble and change his story. They began to probe further and decided to check in a car PFF 8227 that was parked in the yard. There the cops unearthed a parcel with cash stashed under the front seat. Further checks revealed the same quantity of money reported stolen.
Solomon then changed his story. He told investigators that he set up the entire thing because he was short of money and owe a lot of people. It was also understood that the man had received over $1M to pay staff and other chores.
He was told of the offence, arrested and charged.
In court he was placed on $20,000 and the matter has been transferred to the Weldaad Magistrate court for continuation on May 22.
