Jeremy Ames, 28, died yesterday after being crushed by a pile of mirrors at the construction site of the new Giftland Office Max Mall, at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.
According to Denzil Washington, a relative and fellow worker, Ames had gone into a parked container to collect some equipment, when close to 500 mirrors, measuring 10 feet, came crashing down on him. This happened at around 13:00hrs.
Washington said that after hearing the deafening sound of shattering glass, he and several other employees rushed to Ames’s aid. By then, the father of two was covered with glass. Only Ames’s hand could be seen.
“…Suh we start trying to get he out, but it tek a li’l while, because we had to be careful wid de mirrors. If we did move quick, quick, Jeremy woulda get crush up, suh we had to tek we time,” Washington told Kaieteur News.
He said that it took about half of an hour to get Ames out from under the mirrors. By that time, Washington said that his cousin had already appeared to be dead. Ames was rushed to a private city hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Relatives who gathered at the health institution told this newspaper that doctors have told them that Ames suffered a few broken ribs, along with several abdominal and neck injuries.
When this publication visited the hospital yesterday, Ames’s body lay on a bed in the accident and emergency unit, with a few bruises and lacerations.
Kaieteur News contacted the management of Giftland Office Max, but officials there said that the company was not yet ready to comment on the incident.
All the construction workers on the mall were asked to take the rest of the day off.
Ames is survived by his four-month old and eight-year-old children, his sister and a girlfriend with whom he had been residing.
