The trial of murder accused Satrohan Mannaru, called Andrew, 23, of Mibicuri South, Black Bush Polder, who stands indicted for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Indranie “Cynthia” Basdeo, who was 14 at the time, of Lot 74 Mibicuri South, Black Bush Polder.
The killing occurred on Friday October 7, 2011. The trial continued on Wednesday in the Berbice High Court before Justice Dawn Gregory and a mixed jury.
Detective Constable Emanuel Ragnauth who had earlier given his testimony and was being cross examined, was further grilled by Defence Attorney Senior Counsel Bernard De Santos who is appearing in association with Attorney at Law, Pamela De Santos.
Also taking the witness stand was Police Constable Maxton Semple who had earlier given evidence and was further cross examined by Mr. De Santos. The Senior Counsel had also requested that the police produce the station records including the station diary, property book and charge sheet in court. The records were produced in court on Wednesday.
However, the case has been adjourned until Tuesday when the prosecution’s final witness 13-year-old Chandi Narine who is in Suriname is expected to be present.
The prosecution’s case is being conducted by State Prosecutor; Attorney at Law Renita Singh.
In her opening address, Attorney at Law Singh had stated that on the day in question the girl had made arrangements with her sister and brother in law to attend school sports at the Mibicuri school ground.
While at the event, the relatives noticed the accused grab the deceased. It was during that time she allegedly got stabbed since shortly after they observed Mannaru with a knife in his hand and the deceased bleeding.
The girl was rushed to the New Amsterdam hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The prosecution has called a number of witnesses including Detective Assistant Superintendent of Police Gary Mc Alister; Pathologist Dr. Vivekanand Bridgemohan who gave the cause of death as puncture to the heart and lung and hemorrhage; father of the deceased Mahase Basdeo; her mother Gomattie Latchman; Detective Corporal Andrew Ward; Police Constable Maxton Semple; and her sister Tulseidai Basdeo; as well as her brother in law Arnold Reddy. Indranie Basdeo, of Mibicuri South, Black Bush Polder was allegedly brutally murdered by her ex-boyfriend at the Mibicuri School Ground, where the school was hosting school sports.
She was fatally stabbed under her left breast. The girl was an ex student of the school.
The caution statement which was allegedly given by the accused was also admitted into evidence.
