Award-winning R&B singer R. Kelly touched down at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) with a private jet yesterday to perform tonight at the National Stadium.
Two weeks after the postponement of the event which was billed for August 24, 2013 at the Guyana National Stadium, Jamaican Reggae group Morgan Heritage was added to the cast. In addition to Trinidadian Chutney Singer KI, Kes the Band and Chutney Band JMC Triveni will perform at the event dubbed the “Night of Legends.”
At a press conference at CJIA, Head of the Mc. Neal Enterprise, Odinga Lumumba, Hits and Jams official Kerwin Bollers, and Rawle Ferguson disclosed that the event is set to be a spectacular combination with a mixture of flavours and talents.
Present at the event to welcome the artiste also was Tourism Minister Irfaan Ali with tourism officials.
Declaring that his music and performance on stage will be spontaneous, R. Kelly said patrons can expect the “unexpected” which deals with not the performance being a work but an enjoyment to perform.
“I follow the spirit when I perform; I go off for my crowd and make up things on the spot and that’s what makes it a jam session rather than some show.”
Kelly said that what inspires him most of all about his music is love for women. He explained that growing up in a household that was majority women made him able to relate and create more music with a connection about the experiences of women.
With his latest album titled “Black Panties” Kelly further explained that the name was derived from an experience on stage.
“How I got that concept was when I was performing a song called ‘Seems like you ready’ and panties just started flying onto the stage and a pair of black panties came out of the sky and landed on my mike. I said ‘Wow! this is a sign’. I said after the tour was over I would go home and write a song called Black Panties but I ended up writing a whole album.”
