Fifty four -year- old Pritipaul Dhanpaul of Pouderoyen Public Road, West Bank Demerara, proprietor of P. Dhanpaul Variety Shop, is currently nursing a gunshot wound to his right shoulder after he put up a fight against two gunmen who invaded his business place.
Up to press time yesterday Dhanpaul was said to be in a stable condition at a private hospital.
According to reports, at around 11:15 hours, two men emerged from a yellow car and went into the shop posing as regular customers. This publication was told that while in the shop the men each purchased $100 worth of cigarettes. As they were walking out of the shop they suddenly turned back and were joined by two other men who were carrying guns. Two of the men then shut the doors leading to the shop but soon realized that there was no possible way of really getting to any valuables as the entire interior of the building was heavily grilled.
However one of the men grabbed onto Dhanpaul who was behind the counter and a scuffled ensued resulting in the shop owner being shot. At the time only the businessman and the four men were in the shop, while his wife was in the upper flat of the two-storey building. However because of the heavy rain the woman was only alerted of what was going on when she heard the gunshots. As the woman rushed to see what was taking place she found her husband slumped in the shop and the men fleeing. The bandits jumped into a waiting car and fled the area. They reportedly left empty-handed.
The injured man was able to provide the police with a statement while receiving treatment at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
