The death by road accident of 38-year-old Reeshee Baksh of Thomas Street, Kitty, has taken the toll to 96 thus far for the year.
Yesterday at the man’s home his wife, Bibi Haleema Baksh and his relatives were still trying to come to grips with his sudden and gruesome death. Mrs. Baksh told this publication that she spoke to her husband sometime after 19:00 hours on Monday. She said he had called to tell her that he was on the East Bank of Demerara and would be home soon.
Mrs. Baksh said the next call she received was the one that greeted her with the news of her husband’s demise. She told this publication that a person identifying himself as a doctor from the Georgetown Public Hospital telephoned her and asked her to go down to the institution. She said when she arrived her husband had already died.
The accident occurred at the junction of the East Bank highway and Flour Mill Road sometime shortly after 23:00hrs
Eyewitnesses reported that Baksh, who was driving a green Toyota 170 bearing number plate PGG 1661, while travelling south, collided with the edge of the median, spun once and ended up on the other side of the road.
The entire right side of the victim’s lower body was crushed. When this newspaper arrived at the accident scene, police and firefighters, with the help of public spirited citizens, were working feverishly to get the mortally wounded man out of his mangled car. However, no ambulance was present.
Meanwhile, as Guyana celebrates Road Safety Month 2012, recent police statistics, show that overall there has been an 8.1 percent decline in the number of fatalities up to the end of October this year, with 90 deaths recorded, compared with 98 for the same period last year.
Pedestrians continue to head the list of road fatalities so far this year, with figures showing that up to October last, 27 pedestrians were killed.
Meanwhile speeding continues to be a major contributory factor to fatal accidents, causing 63 of the 83 fatal accidents for the year. Pedal cyclists and drivers at 17 each, were the other high road casualties – this is in addition to 12 motorcyclists.
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
