The seven affiliated basketball clubs of the Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) will be featured when the BOSAI Minerals Group (Guyana) Inc. sponsored Open Challenge tournament bounces off Saturday at the Mackenzie Sports Club, Hard Court.
Recently, the Linden bauxite operations majority owners delivered on a promise made to enhance the promotion of sports in the Mining Town with a timely donation of $300,000 to LABA for this tourney.
Assistant Treasurer of the LABA Ms. Rowena DeJonge accepted the donation which was made by Production Superintendent of BOSAI Mr. Jason Wang in the BOSAI Administrative Office Boardroom.
A LABA release stated that Mr. Wang said that the company was pleased to make the donation as they accepted responsibility as a corporate body in the Town and is committed to encouraging the promotion of sports in the community where they operate.
Ms. DeJonge thanked the Bauxite industry for their contribution for which they are the major sponsor as it came at a challenging time for the sport in the region.
Among those who were present at the presentation ceremony were Chairman of the BOSAI Sports Committee Mr. Wayne Bethune, Community Relations Assistant Ms. Vanessa Mitchell-Davis and Secretary of LABA Mr. Joseph Chapman.
Financial contributions were also made to the Guyana Beach Football Association and the Victory Valley Royals Basketball Club.
The clubs that will be contesting this inaugural BOSAI Open Challenge championship are LABA Senior Club champions Kashif and Shanghai Kings, Amelia’s Ward Jets, Victory Valley Royals, Wismar Pistons, Retrieve Raiders, Half Mile Bulls and Block 22 Flames.
The tournament will be played at weekends and will see teams placed in two groups according to their seedings from the last Trophy Stall regulation tournament which was staged earlier this year.
The Kashif and Shanghai Kings emerged as the top seed. There will be one game on Saturday when there will be an official opening ceremony and on Sunday there will be a double header.
