On Saturday evening Guyanese were again welcomed to the Inter-Guiana Cultural Festival held at the National Cultural Centre (NCC) where a Surinamese group took to the stage and showcased their country’s history, culture, traditions and beliefs through song, dance, story-telling and pictorial displays.
Members of the audience were also invited on stage to participate in a dance routine with the cast members.
Each country was given a specific night to share its talents with the Guyanese public who responded with enthusiasm.
Apart from the country night there were other events where each country was given the opportunity to share its knowledge, skills and talents; these included exhibitions in visual and literary arts, culinary and performing arts, and fashion.
The Inter-Guiana Festival is premised on the notion of building bridges of friendship among the Guianas –Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana-and provides for the celebration of cultural practices amongst the three countries. It also allows for the interaction of cultural practitioners, administrators and those in love with and willing to learn about the culture and other practices in the various countries at one celebration.
The Second Inter-Guiana Cultural Festival attracted 50 participants each from Guyana and Suriname and 60 from French Guiana, participating in a host of cultural activities which showcased their cultural diversity.
The festival commenced on August 23 and concluded yesterday. It was held under the theme ‘Celebrating our culture, bridging our friendship’. GINA
