As the cricket season comes to a close, the Essequibo Cricket Board noted some of its achievements for the year 2011, starting with the U-15 tournament. The board ran off a competition at this level throughout the Essequibo area that was sponsored by Sterling Products. From this competition the board selected its inter-county team to participate in the Guyana Cricket Board tournament from which two players namely Kemo Paul and Ricardo Peters made the national team.
The ECB also ran off an U-19 competition sponsored by Goodwood Racing Service. Again the inter-county team was selected and from the competition four players, Ricardo Adams, Anthony Adams, Kevon Boodie and Ronsford Beaton were selected to represent Guyana in the regional tournament with Beaton being the captain.
It was the first time in the history of Essequibo cricket that four players were selected to represent Guyana at any level simultaneously. The Essequibo Board then ran off its annual Busta Festival for senior cricketers sponsored by Guyana Beverage Inc. The final was played under lights at the Wakenaam Community Centre ground for the first time with the first prize being $100,000. The inter-county team was selected from which Norman Federicks and Ronsford Beaton gained selection on the National team.
Additionally Rekha Roopnauth was selected to represent Guyana’s female U-19 team against Trinidad and Tobago; Kemo Paul, Mark Gonsalves and Ricardo Peters are on the Guyana U-17 team to compete in the regional tournament scheduled for Trinidad in 2012, while Ronsford Beaton and Dillon Heyliger are a part of the national twenty \20 squad to play in the Regional competition next year.
However the Board would also like to note that its inter-county teams failed to win a title for the year and as such a number of competitions and developmental programmes have been planned to rectify this situation in the New Year.
Public Relations Officer Nazeer Mohamed said that the Essequibo area has a lot of talented cricketers and is calling on corporate Guyana to invest in Essequibo’s cricket to harness these talents.
He also told Kaieteur sport that the Board would like to thank its sponsors and is looking forward to their continued support in the coming year to move Essequibo cricket forward and would like to thank this Newspaper for providing coverage for their cricket. (Zaheer Mohamed)
