A fire tender from the Central Fire Station ended up in the Lamaha Street canal after colliding with a car at the Albert Street junction yesterday afternoon.
The fire tender was at the time hurrying to a bush fire behind the Guyana Technical Institute when it slammed into a Toyota Caldina, HB 5652. The incident occurred shortly after 16:00 hrs.
The collision left the front of the car totally destroyed while the fire tender crashed into the bridge rail and snapped an electrical pole before coming to a halt in the canal.
Information gathered on the scene revealed that the fire truck was travelling along Albert Street, and the taxi was heading along Lamaha Street.
Kaieteur News was told that the taxi driver did not heed the fire tender’s siren that many said they heard.
The driver of the taxi, who reluctantly spoke to Kaieteur News, said that he did not hear the fire tender approaching.
A section of the Alberttown area was left without electricity as a result of the accident.
Workers from the Guyana Power and Light Company were swift to respond to reports of the severed pole as electrical wires which posed a serious hazard, covered the street. Up to late yesterday afternoon they were seen working in the area trying to restore power.
The driver of the taxi was taken to the hospital after complaining about a pain in the neck.

did they put out the fire?
the truck was going to full up with water they did not want to run out of water this time ha ha ha. the taxi driver did not heed the fire tender, so don’t the fire tender have to proceed with caution? sell more license GPFsell more
That taxi driver did hear the siren, but this is how drivers in Guyana behave. There is absolutely no respect for the law.
PPL/drivers need to pay attention when they r driving and adhere all times to the sirens of emergency vehicles. They should be made to pay for the repairs of the emergency vehicle(s) nonsense.
Maybe the driver was to wild or the car driver was ignoring the siren.
I bet the reason he didn’t hear the siren was:
a) he was playing loud music in his car, or
b) he was on his mobile phone.
Any takers?
The fire tender is from Alberttown Fire Station and was headed North on Albert Street. My question is, are the traffic lights at this intersection working, as I have read on many occasions that these lights are defective. It appears clear from the photo that the driver of the fire tender attempted to take evasive action on noticing the car failing to respond to the siren the reason the car was hit on the front end and the fire truck entering the trench on the right side of the bridge.
The photo also shows that the driver was very close to the intersection and should have heard the siren. Thankfully the damage appears minimal and this can be returned back to service shortly.
pay the price of an injured cervix, why? YOU NEED TO HEED THE FIRE PATROL
WOW that a fire truck hmmmm that must be the new 2015 one i wonder which fire that can put out
