A two-day technical session convened by Banks DIH, and involving the Caribbean Breweries Association ended yesterday at Banks’ Thirst Park headquarters in Ruimveldt.
Participants discussed a number of pertinent factors affecting and related to manufacturing, including bottling line efficiency, efficient brewing, yeast management and sanitation, and general standards.
Caribbean Breweries Association member countries are Bahamas , Barbados , Belize, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Grenada, Haiti, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Netherlands, Suriname , Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica, Antigua, Dominican Republic, and Guyana.
Most countries were represented at the event and a representative from Europe was also present.
According to Henry Merchant, Quality Assurance Manager Banks DIH, the brewing industry has existed in Member States of CARICOM for over 90 years. The oldest being Desnoes and Geddes (Red Stripe) Brewery, Jamaica established 1918, while the most recent is The Cayman Islands Brewery established in 2006.
He said Banks DIH is also involved with Governments, dealing with strategies to minimize the abuse of alcohol across the region.
Chairman of the Caribbean Breweries Association and Assistant Managing Director of Banks DIH, George Mc Donald, asserted that the business is essentially under threat by anti-alcohol lobby, since everyday in the newspapers, comparisons are being made about the effects of alcohol and the arguments about the use and abuse of alcohol.
He emphasised to the gathering how important it is to “use the innovative and technological skills to dispel this notion that alcohol products, including beer, are toxic in nature…those of us who have an aversion to alcohol will always find a reason that people should not consume alcohol.”
Noting that the alcohol industry is a significant contributor to the GDP, Mc Donald said there is need to protect the business and meaningfully discuss use versus abuse of alcohol
