Taffin Khan demonstrated grit and determination to defeat former National Chess Champion (2007-2008) Kriskal Persaud and duly won the Neal & Massy/Seven Seas National Chess Championship when the two players clashed in a playoff at the Keishar’s Sports Club.
Khan, a former junior champion, also became the youngest person to win the prestigious prize.
Khan employed the brakes to demolish Persaud in just four games, amassing 3 ½ points to Persaud’s ½ point. In the first twenty minutes rapid game, Khan capitalized after Persaud made a crucial blunder by allowing his queen to be trapped. Despite his vast experience Persaud was unable to recover and subsequently resigned.
The second game lasted for 15 minutes and saw the experienced Persaud taking a much more precocious approach but all to no avail. Intelligent ploys by the young Khan ensured that the game ended in a draw. Game three lasted for all of 10 minutes with Khan replicating his performance as of the first game. He won that match and took his tally to 2 ½ points, merely a ½ point lead. Khan sealed the issue in game four when Persaud found himself in trouble after a clever combination by Khan which earned him a bishop and forced Persaud to resign. Since Khan had attained an unassailable lead, the fourth game became unnecessary and he prevailed 3 ½ – ½ points.
The final rank standing is: 2010; New National Champion, Taffin Khan, Kriskal Persaud (2nd), David Khan (3rd), Learie Webster (4th), Frankie Farley (5th), Ryan Singh (6th), National Junior Champion Ron Motilall (7th) and Errol Tiwari ending in the cellar in the 8th position.
The Guyana Chess Federation would like to express sincere thanks to Neal & Massy and Seven Seas and The Ocean Spray Hotel for their support in making the tournament a success.
