The Guyana Teacher’s Union has stated that all plans for the 50th Annual National Schools Athletic Championship have been put on hold. The union said, yesterday that it is protesting the action taken against three teachers of Queen’s College.
Recently Cabinet Secretary Dr. Roger Luncheon stated that the investigation carried out into the involvement of the teachers into the Neesa Gopaul case found at least four teacher of Queen’s College guilty of negligence.
Last evening Colin Bynoe, President of the Guyana Teacher Union, in an invited comment said that the union received word of the development yesterday.
According to Bynoe the Union was informed that the teachers were sanctioned by way of letter signed by the Permanent Secretary and copied to the Teaching Service Commission.
The letter sought to inform the teachers of the disciplinary action taken. Acting Deputy Head, Nadia Hollingsworth has been barred from promotion for three years. She assumed the position late last year.
The GTU said that when the Neesa Gopaul story broke Ms Gem Rohlehr was performing the duties of Deputy head. Hollingsworth replaced her after the protest broke when the Education Ministry sought to have Rohlehr appointed Deputy Head after she had retired.
A source is now contending that Hollingsworth is being punished for objecting to being superseded by Fazia Baksh who was being pitchforked into the office of Deputy Head.
The other teachers being sanctioned are Candida Williams and Carol Marks, the two teachers who took Neesa Gopaul to the police after they discovered that she was being abused. They are being denied promotion for a year.
Head teacher Friedel Isaacs, who has proceeded on leave pending her retirement, is also being sanctioned.
According to Bynoe, following this development which was brought to the Union’s attention, an emergency meeting was held since all of the teachers involved are members of the union.
Bynoe said that during the meeting the union learnt that the letters the teachers received were copied to a number of Government officials but to its astonishment none was copied to the union.
“We feel that they (The Ministry of Education) is in a false relationship with us.”
Bynoe said that according to the Memorandum of Understanding between the Union and the Minister, it is agreed that once an investigation has to be conducted against any teacher the union must be involved. However this was not done in the recent investigation.
“That is a basic labour position; they flouted
