Eighteen- year old Malika Matteson, of South Better Hope, East Coast Demerara was on Friday night added to the list of road fatalities in Guyana.
The young girl was struck down by a speeding car as she walked along the # 28 Village Public Road, Berbice. The driver of the vehicle who is said to be a relative of a senior regional official in Berbice was taken into custody minutes after the accident.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver was recently held in connection with a robbery and was also released from prison a year ago after being charged for murder.
Yesterday when this newspaper visited the teen’s home, a number of relatives had gathered.
Audrey Newton, the teen’s mother told this publication that she got the message about her daughter’s death shortly after midnight on Friday.
The woman said her daughter was heading to Hopetown, Berbice with some friends when she was struck down.
“I was told that Malika was walking in the corner and the vehicle just knocked her down”.
She was rushed to the hospital where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
Kaieteur News understands that the driver is expected to be charged sometime next week.
