Following the receipt of a correspondence from the hierarchy of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) approving the encampment of the team of boxers identified to represent this country at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico, the six boxers will go into training camp within the next few days.
Coach of the Guyana Defence Force, Terrence Poole will tutor the boxers with assistance from Sebert Blake. Mr. Poole told Kaieteur Sport that the GABA has received the letter of approval and are now preparing the accommodation for the boxers to move in within the next week.
Those boxers are Clevon Rock (lightweight), Herlando Allicock (junior flyweight), Dexter Jordon (flyweight), Ray Sandiford (featherweight), Burt Braithwaite (junior/welterweight) and Devon Boatswain (middleweight).
Currently, the boxers are training in the National Park from 05:00hrs in the mornings and the Forgotten Youth Foundation Gym, Albouystown from 16:00hrs. Yesterday morning, the squad went through their paces at the FYF and Poole expressed satisfaction at their intense level of application. Poole, himself a bronze medalist at the 1993 CAC Games, also staged in Puerto Rico, said that the coaching team is cognizant of the quality of competition at the CAC Games. He said that they would be implementing the appropriate training methods to help the boxers cope with the rigid requirements.
Guyanese boxers have enjoyed fair successes at these games up to 1993 when three boxers, Hugo Lewis, Joel Duncan and Wakefield Skeete returned from Puerto Rico with bronze medals. Poole reminded that he later returned as a coach in 2002 to lead featherweight boxer, Paul Lewis to a bronze medal at the very CAC Games.
Poole feels that based on the performances of the selected boxers at the trials, Guyana stands a good chance of acquiring major accolades. Clevon Rock, a junior Commonwealth Games silver medalist, recently squared off against Nankumar Singh and after a torrid three rounds, came out victorious.
Devon Boatswain and Bert Braithwaite also boxed in a three rounds exhibition match after Dennis Thomas, initially elected to battle Boatswain failed to appear for the bout. Poole said that the coaching staff noted Rock’s application and realized that he will have to work hard in the conditioning department.
“We would be putting a lot of emphasis on conditioning of the boxers as well as their technical skills,” said Poole. He intimated that the boxers would commence sparring sessions by midweek.
The coach also said that the boxers would be exposed to pep talk sessions, complimented with the viewing of international amateur bouts as well as a few professional fights.
“We will be wary of the Cubans and Mexicans, strong forces at this level. Right now we are in general conditioning phase and would soon begin to deal with tactics and strategies,” said Poole.
It is disgusting that our teachers have to protest in the streets for a…
