Sangeeta Persaud’s death…
During the Hindu Constituency Meeting held on Monday by the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC), the Commission was asked to assist in resolving issues surrounding the death of 14-year-old Sangeeta Persaud.
The circumstances under which the teenager died had stirred some amount of religious conflict between the Hindus and Christians of Canal No. 2 Polder, the community where she lived.
According to Chairman of the ERC, Bishop Juan Edghill, the Hindu representatives at Monday’s meeting proposed a round table discussion with the aim of settling all the differences and to get rid of the assumed negative perception either religion has for each other.
Bishop Edghill has stated that the Commission is willing to facilitate the discussions should the Christian Constituency agree for such deliberations. The Christian representatives have agreed for the discussions to take place and for the ERC to be the Mediator.
However, he noted that the two bodies will have to agree to the modalities for the deliberations. The discussions will commence when this is done.
Sangeeta Persaud died early last month after she was reportedly subjected to attempts to exorcise demons by the pastor of a Christian church. She had a medical history of meningitis. It was not until hours after the attempts to drive the spirits out of the teenager that her relatives took her to the West Demerara Hospital. Despite the best efforts of the medical personnel, she died shortly afterwards.
Government Pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh later confirmed that the exorcism had nothing to do with Persaud’s death – she had died from meningitis.
Her death had created a huge division between the residents of Canal Number Two Polder on the West Bank of Demerara, especially between the two religious groups.
