– to advertise soon for applicants for training programme
The Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) will soon be advertising for applicants to participate in a training programme leading to a Level 1 Coach Certificate.
The programme will run during four weekends in September and October and will be conducted by one of the regional tennis coaches. Financing for the programme is being sought from the Olympic Solidarity Fund through the Guyana Olympic Association.
This was one of the announcements made by GLTA Vice-President Mr. Rawle Sue-Ho during a well attended presentation ceremony on Monday evening, at the office of Ram & McRae.
The occasion marked the end of an eight-day practical and theoretical programme of activities involving coaches, players and administrators which was conducted by International Tennis Federation (ITF) Development Officer Trinidadian Anthony Jeremiah.
Sue-Ho also reported that the executive has decided on the formation of a national senior team and identified Phillip Squires and Rebecca Mitchell as captain and vice-captain respectively.
Certificates of participation in the recently concluded programme were presented to Level One and pre-Level One coaches and among those that received was Mr. Bashir Khan of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport who facilitated the indoor tennis sessions at the Sports Hall in Homestretch Avenue.
In brief remarks to the gathering of parents, players, coaches and the executive, GLTA President Christopher Ram acknowledged the courage of the five members of the Guyana Junior Squad who represented the country at the World Junior Tennis Championship preliminary round held in Trinidad and Tobago. He referred to a card sent to the Executive by the five – Aretta Dey, Nicola Ramdyhan, Gavin Lewis, Daniel Lopes and Khalif Gobin in which they wrote, “Unfortunately we were unable to achieve our goals this time, but we recognize the need for more training which we hope can be arranged. Thanks again and we will do better next tournament”.
Also in attendance was Mr. Brian Fung, former national tennis player and member of the Toronto Friends of the GLTA who made a presentation of several racquets including one Collectors’ piece – an original Head Graphite endorsed by Arthur Ashe.
Tennis buffs will recall that that is the type of racquet which Ashe used so effectively to counteract the power to beat Jimmy Connors in the 1975 Wimbledon Finals.
Fung complimented the current executive, noting that while there was a far way to go to restore tennis to its glory days, he was enthused by what he saw and is confident that tennis is moving in the right direction. He said that this was the message he would be taking back and promised further donations from his Toronto group.
It is disgusting that our teachers have to protest in the streets for a…
