7 players denied US Visas
By Franklin Wilson
The Guyana Defence Force’s participation in the Caribbean Football Union’s Champion’s League Qualifying competition hangs in the balance with seven (7) of its main players denied US Visas.
GDF has been drawn in group B to be hosted by Puerto Rico club side Bayamon FC and also includes top St. Vincent & The Grenadines club, Systems 3.
The Army is scheduled to play on March 25 and 27 but their participation is not certain following the denial of visas.
Kaieteur Sport understands that the entire team including the Technical Staff was interviewed on Thursday last at the US Embassy, Georgetown but only 11 of them were successful.
Since this development, the Management of the GDF has dispatched letters to the Caribbean Football Union and the Guyana Football Federation seeking their intervention. The Army has asked them to consider a change of venue given the reality of the situation; the scheduled dates – be reconsidered; or that the GDF be placed in another group.
If any of the above is not possible, the GDF is asking that clause A under ‘Withdrawals’ (force majeure) in the CFU Club Championship Tournament Regulations be activated. The regulation states: “Teams having entered the competition are obligated to play all their matches until they are eliminated. After entering the tournament, a team that fails to participate, shall be penalized as follows, except in unforeseen circumstances and cases of force majeure as determined by the CFU Executive Committee.”
Round one qualifying matches have been rescheduled twice to date, the last date given was March 16, 18 and 20 but has since confirmed for March 23, 25 and 27.
The Runner-up club of the Jamaican National League was originally placed in this group but has since pulled out due to the high costs associated with participation, making the battle a three-way tie. Two teams will advance to round two of qualifying from this group.
Kaieteur Sport has been reliably informed that the CFU has since dispatched a letter to the GDF and the Embassy in the form of an appeal while GFF President Colin Klass, who is also a Vice President of the CFU, is in constant contact with the Caribbean body trying to ensure that the Army participates. A number of options are being looked at.
It is disgusting that our teachers have to protest in the streets for a…
