‘Let us support the women in Haiti’ is the call of a newly formed women’s Collective. The group which comprises a number of women’s organizations including representatives of social, political and faith-based organizations met under the aegis of the Women’s Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Labour Human Services and Social Security, to determine ways in which they could assist in meeting some of the specific needs of the women in Haiti.
Their focus was first on raising funds, and secondly on collecting dry goods and non-perishable items for shipment to Haiti at an opportune time. Emphasis was placed on the fact that the pride and dignity of the Haitians must be taken into consideration when contributions “in kind” were being made.
This group was unanimous in the view that all women should be given an opportunity to make their contribution. A walk-a-ton has therefore been organized which will see a large number of women traversing several streets affording women the opportunity to come out and make their donations in cash or kind.
Women pursuing their normal chores, those out on their routine activities could conveniently make their donations during this activity.
The Walk-a –ton takes place on Saturday from 6:30hrs to 10:00hrs. The assembly point is Parliament Building. The details of the route will be published in the Media.
The newly formed group in a press release stated that Women from all Organisations are urged to come out and join the march. “It is the involvement of all women which would allow us to meet our objective of meaningful assistance”.
They urged that all house wives, shoppers and those engaged in other activities heed this call to assist the anguished mothers of Haiti.
“You could make a monetary donation or provide non perishables packed in bags which we will collect on the walk.”
