A 30-year-old construction worker yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on a drug charge.
Andrew Wilson is accused of having cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
It is alleged that on September 16, the defendant was held with 40 grams of cannabis.
Wilson’s counsel made a request for reasonable bail for his client claiming that there were special circumstances surrounding his request.
According to Attorney-at-Law Adrian Thompson, his client has no connections whatsoever with the drugs, which were discovered in an outhouse. Thompson argued that the controlled substance was discovered in another yard, one apart from his client’s own.
He continued on by stating that the yard in which the outhouse that the drugs were found in was an ‘open yard’ which he described as a tenement yard.
Thompson told the court that his client could not be found in the yard at the said time that the drugs were discovered. He said that he believes that the police were desperate to link somebody to the find, and in an effort to put a name to the crime arrested his client.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith however had a different version of events. According to Griffith, Wilson was seen moments before the find by police, running into the said yard and entering and exiting the ‘outhouse’ in which the cannabis was found. She further stated that the yard in question was not open, and that Thompson was mistaken in his arguments.
Griffith also disclosed to the court that Wilson had offered the arresting officers a $20,000 bribe to let him walk, adding that additional charges should be filed against him.
Andrew Wilson was refused bail and is to return to court October 22.
