Seven year old Scott Figuerado yesterday placed second in the finals of the senior category of the Yarrowkabra Community Policing Group’s (Youth Arm) Spelling ‘B’ competition.
At yesterday’s competition, Figuerado competed with Lashawn Ann Mootoo, aged 14, and Marissa Carrington aged 12, in the senior category.

Despite doing his best, Scott and Mootoo ended up in a tie, with Mootoo eventually emerging as the winner.
Figuerado was visibly put out by this, but was encouraged by his mother to not take this as the end of the road.
At the beginning of the contest, Scott had refused to be enrolled in the junior category, commenting that the words were too easy.
First place in the senior category went to Lashawn Ann Mootoo, while Scott took second place, Marissa Carrington was third.
In the junior categories, Nailah Williams was awarded first place, Richlyn Gariba second and Kevin Barker third.
Phillip Ishmael, Liaison Officer of the Community Policing Group to the Ministry of Home Affairs, presented the trophies to the contestants, and promised that this competition will not be the last of its kind. He hopes to be able to challenge other communities along the East Bank of Demerara, and even eventually get the competition out to other areas around Guyana.
Murray Greenidge, representative of the Ministry of Education, encouraged the youths in the competition not to end their progress there, but to strive for more and continue on their way to success.
