Another boat mishap, this time in the Pomeroon River, has left one more boat captain dead.
Moses Narine, 50, called Broad Back, perished when his boat powered by a 15-horsepower outboard engine, was reportedly struck by another vessel around 12:15 hours yesterday. His body was recovered from his badly damaged boat.
Like the boat mishap that occurred in the Essequibo River earlier this week in which two persons were killed and another remains missing, only Narine’s boat was found at the scene of the suspected accident, which occurred near Moruka.
“Nobody knows what hit him, but his boat was badly damaged. It look like another hit and run,” a source in the Charity area where Narine’s body was taken, told this newspaper.
The incident bears a striking similarity to the one in which Jainarine Deenanauth called ‘Rama’, and Henry Gibson lost their lives. Both men were found dead in a boat captained by Gibson near Hogg Island in the Essequibo River.
The body of Jainarine’s 10-year old son who was also in the boat has not yet been found.
There were speculations that the incident may have been a robbery, however investigators have found evidence that it was an accident. It was suggested that Deenanauth was relieved of his jewellery and cash although his firearm was recovered from his pants pocket.
Yet sources have revealed that the man was not wearing his jewellery at the time of the incident.
According to a source Gibson’s damaged boat bears green markings, which suggested the colour of the other vessel that was involved in the accident.
The source said that there is information that some boat operators were imbibing on the Supenaam side of the Essequibo River and that they had left for Parika in two boats the night when the incident is believed to have occurred.
However, only one of the boats was seen at the Parika Stelling since the incident.
It is believed that the missing boat which is reportedly green in colour may have been hidden to conceal the damage it sustained as a result of crashing into Gibson’s vessel.
