To feature Brazilian night, St Lucian flower Festival
The mining community of Mahdia, in Region Eight (Potaro/Siparuni) opens itself to perhaps its most massive entertainment event yet this weekend.
Despite the late announcement for coastlanders, Mahdia hopes it can lure visitors yet still, moreso because of the unique activities it hosts – activities such as a Brazilian night, a replica of the St Lucian Rose Festival, along with a competition titled “All that glitters” in which participants get to keep the gold or diamond they find, porkknocker style.
The organisers only made the announcement yesterday for an event that commences tomorrow. The announcement was made at the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, with Minister Manniram Prashad throwing his weight behind the event.
Mahdia expo runs from Friday to Sunday.
The Ministry is the major sponsor of the Miss Mahdia Beauty Pageant, which is billed for Saturday evening.
Event Coordinator, Daniel Fraser, said that the organisers decided on the St Lucia Rose Festival because the mining community attracted a number of St Lucians in the early days of the community, and in fact some St Lucians still live in Mahdia.
Minister Prashad announced that Mahdia can become an important tourism destination and as such he said the Ministry is considering placing a tourism extension officer in the community.
BE THANKFUL AND GRATEFUL TO THE FOREIGN EXPLOITERS
