The police are trying to ascertain the identity of the driver who failed to take 78-year-old, Eileen August, to hospital after knocking her down on July 27 last.
A police source told Kaieteur News that they are following leads, which they hope may result in the suspect being apprehended and charged.
The police official stated that it takes someone with a “hardened mind” to hit down a senior citizen and take her home with all those injuries and just place her in a “rocking chair”.
“This individual must be punished by the law to the fullest extent” the official said.
Mrs. August, who resides at Lot 704 West Ruimveldt, said that he was on her way to Bourda Market when the driver struck her down from behind.
She sustained a broken femur and broken leg along with other abrasions.
Mrs. August alleged that the “tall and dark skinned” man then placed her in the vehicle.
But she claimed that rather than take her to the hospital, the young man took her to the market and bought her items.
She alleged that the man, who had his own mother in the vehicle, then said that he needed to go his grandmother’s funeral instead.
After this, he allegedly took her home and placed her into her rocking chair. Because of her injuries, Mrs. August was unable to reach her telephone to alert her family about her plight.
She remained there until last Thursday when an in-law went searching for her after repeatedly trying to reach the elderly woman by phone.
