The administration will be meeting Caribbean Airlines to press its concerns about the treatment of Guyana in its fare structure.
Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon, during his weekly press briefing, today, said that it was pointed out at the recent Cabinet meeting that Caribbean Airlines would have grave difficulties in explaining how the cost of an airfare from Trinidad to JFK could compare so unfavorably with the airfare from Georgetown to New York or even Georgetown to Trinidad.
Dr. Luncheon noted that Cabinet was advised by the Prime Minister that the executives of the airlines were summons for an engagement on clarifying this matter.
“The unfair treatment of Guyana in the fare structure does extend beyond Caribbean Airlines,” Dr. Luncheon said. He added that the impression that he has got is that wherever there is evidence of the ‘unfair treatment’ of Guyana in the fare structure, it will be discussed with the Prime Minister.
At present the cost from Guyana to New York via Caribbean Airlines is over US$900. If the ticket is bought in Trinidad for the onward connection it is less than half of that charge.
