Dear Editor,
Ravens swing man Lugard Mohan with nine victories from 19 matches is the most successful Guyana basketball captain at international tournaments.
Former Guyana Defence Force (GDF) officer Ronald Pickering had the honour of leading Guyana at its first major international tournament – the Central American Championship in Venezuela. Guyana won one match against Trinidad & Tobago.
Mike Brusche took over the captaincy from Ron Pickering for the 1973 Central American Championship in Puerto Rico; Guyana lost all matches contested. Michael Brusche again was at the helm when the Land of Many Waters returned to the Central American Championship in the Dominica Republic and won one match, defeating Haiti.
Hewley Harry was the man calling the shots when Guyana hosted the first CARICOM Championship in 1981; Guyana won against Dominica, Antigua and Barbados. Harry again was in charge for the 1982 tournament in Jamaica. Guyana lost matches against the Bahamas and Suriname, but defeated the British Virgin Islands.
When Guyana returned to the CARICOM Championship in 1985, hosted by Barbados, another centre was trusted with the captaincy, this time the responsibility was shouldered by Eon ‘Watusi’ Andrews.
The national team lost matches against Barbados and Trinidad & Tobago, but won by default against Martinique. The following year 1986 James Brusche emulated his elder brother Mike by being the first siblings to captain Guyana at an International basketball championship, but the achievement failed to inspire Guyana who, suffered loses to hosts Trinidad, Barbados and The Bahamas, but defeated Grenada. Leon Christian was the man in charge when Guyana hosted the 1988 championship.
The Land of Many Waters defeated Suriname and Aruba, but went down to Antigua & Barbuda, Jamaica and The Bahamas. Christian was at the helm again when Guyana participated in 1991 in Jamaica. The Guyanese lost to Barbados, Jamaica and Suriname, but defeated the Cayman Islands.
When the CARICOM Championship returned to Guyana in 1994, just like in 1988 Leon Christian was the man wearing the captaincy armband. The locals defeated Suriname and Trinidad & Tobago twice, but lost on both occasions against Barbados, including the final.
Although the Land of Many Waters was led by co-captains Leon Christians and Lugard Mohan for the 1995 CARICOM Championship in the Bahamas the national team lost all four preliminaries matches.
When Leon Christian migrated to the United States in 1995 his protégé Lugard Mohan took over the national team captaincy for the 1996 CARICOM Championship in Trinidad and Tobago. Guyana won matches against the Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, St Lucia and Grenada and had losses against Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica twice, including the semi-finals and versus the Bahamas for third place.
Guyana’s next CARICOM Championship appearance was (2000) in Barbados. Lugard Mohan was still the man at the helm. The Land of Many Waters had victories against Antigua & Barbuda, Dominica, Jamaica and Belize, the defending champions for third place. Guyana only lost in the preliminaries was against hosts Barbados. The second taste of defeat was against the United States Virgin Islands in the semi finals.
Guyana’s last international appearance at the Caribbean Basketball Championship was 2007 in Puerto Rico. DC Jammers Antric Klaiber had the honour of being the first player from the Washington based DC Jammers to lead the Land of Many Waters.
Guyana defeated Antigua & Barbuda and the British Virgin Islands, but suffered heavy losses to hosts Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
