A high-level team from the Ministry of Agriculture has been dispatched to the Pomeroon following reports of a caterpillar infestation.
The team was sent to investigate and take necessary action by working with farmers to control the pest and avoid its spread.
During the inspection and interaction with farmers, it transpired that the infestation was not widespread.
Farms that were affected were treated, while precautions were taken to prevent the caterpillar from spreading to neighbouring farms by spraying the perimeter of affected farms.
In addition, the Ministry’s extension staff conducted training on the application and treatment for the caterpillars, while a quantity of chemicals were presented to farmers to ensure control and eradication of the caterpillars that were defoliating coconut palms.
Farmers were also urged to clear overgrown weeds within their coconut cultivation to ensure the caterpillars and other pests are not harboured within.
Meanwhile, the Plant Health Department and the National Agricultural Research Institute will continue to interact with farmers and monitor the situation closely.
