Dear Editor,
We all know that noise can play a very important part in causing road accidents. We also know that music can have a corrupting effect on the minds, even an uplifting of the spirit.
Music can be food of the soul as was said by Shakespeare.
Today our landscape is saturated with noise that we mistake for music and songs. It is my view that song and singing must bring out in people the finest quality of feelings.
We, long ago, use to appreciate songs for their soothing effect on the soul; we use to admire the voices of singers, which was what we often laid stress on.
Today, the whole situation is quite contrasting: we can say so much about the voices of the songsters that almost everyone who has some cussing out to do does it without much difficulty.
Songs can be made by anyone by the street in a spontaneous manner, looking at someone to target and the lyrics would flow, in most cases they are such degrading stuff that many who know no better would gravitate to them.
We use to believe that someone who appreciates songs is someone who is somewhat refined because songs that were around about a generation ago were songs with clean messages.
We cannot say this is so in the majority of cases today. We had a national competition both chutney and calypso; we had winners in both categories.
It is sad to say that those songs carried no messages of worth. What I think needs to be done is for these people to ask for help to word their songs, have them critiqued before entering the competition.
There are those who vend songs and are making themselves nuisances by placing themselves where they think everyone will hear them. This might be good for business but bad for safety.
I would like to refer to one such nuisance at the junction of the Diamond New Scheme. Oft-times this vendor would be blaring music so loud that it drowned all vehicular sounds.
He vends at a point where people and vehicles are constantly crisscrossing. It is a very busy intersection especially at peak hours.
The relevant authorities should encourage this vendor to vacate that area and relocate somewhere else that will be less distracting to motorists and pedestrians.
I know for a fact that everyone around would be relieved as this vendor takes pleasure in advertising his most vulgar songs for public consumption.
The vendor has a right to sell his commodities to those who are willing to purchase, but his present location should not be used for such a noisy business.
