The Partnership and Networking for Development in Guyana yesterday donated five computers to the South Ruimveldt Primary School. The computers are expected to facilitate the opening of a computer laboratory for the school.
The computers were handed over to head teacher of the school, Mrs. Hazel Drakes, by vice president of the organization, Dr. Winston Headley.
Mrs. Drakes expressed her gratitude to the organization for its kind gesture. She noted that, for the longest while, the school has been trying to source computers for the laboratory, but to no avail.
Drakes said that Information Technology should be introduced into primary schools, given the fact that the nation is in the 21st century.
According to Drakes, now that the school is somewhat equipped to start Information Technology programmes, the task ahead will be to ensure that teachers are in place to start the programme. Already, she said, the school has one certified Information Technology teacher, Ms. Vonnetta Saul.
Vice President Dr. Winston Headley called on the staff to resuscitate the Parent Teacher-Association, given the importance of such a body within a school system. Headley added that the organization will be monitoring the laboratory and there would be more such donations.
According to Headley, his organization is in support of introducing Information Technology to primary schools, since there is the need for access to information.
Also speaking on the occasion was president of the Organization, Dr. Richard Van West-Charles, who said that his organisation is focused mainly on poverty alleviation and on capacity building.
Moreso, with emphasis being placed on the establishment of learning centres across the country, the organization has collaborated with several faith-based organizations towards meeting the needs of society.
Meanwhile, other institutions which are expected to benefit from some of these collaborations are the Linden Care Foundation and the Agricola Community Training Centre.
