A detective constable attached to the Brickdam Criminal Investigations Department fraud squad has been placed under close arrest for allegedly stealing $2.4M from the police property room.
The theft was discovered yesterday, a few days after Acting Police Commissioner Henry Greene inspected the station and gave it an A grade pass. Kaieteur News understands that the money, which represents exhibits in a number of fraud cases, was placed in the property room for safe keeping.
A source at the Brickdam Police Station told this newspaper that the detective constable, who is familiar with the several fraud matters that are connected with the cash, had uplifted it, claiming that he was taking it to court as exhibits. However, he never returned the cash.
It was only after subsequent checks were made and the detective could not give account for the money he had uplifted that a thorough investigation was launched. “This was a blatant breakdown of the system that was capitalized on by the rank,” said the source.
