The second annual Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) Sixes cricket competition and third in the last decade, is set for Tuesday (Deepavali Day) from 08:00hrs and plenty of action on and off the field is anticipated.
The 2008 nine-team five-over competition for first division teams was officially launched yesterday at the MSC pavilion on Thomas Lands and it was disclosed that this year’s competition will be bigger than last year when City side DCC defeated Berbice team Young Warriors in the final of the eight-team tournament.
This year, the hosts, the defending Champions, Police, GCC, GDF, GNIC and Transport Sports Club will be the Georgetown sides vying for the $60,000 first prize and Trophy along with Young Warriors and Rose Hall Town.
The runner-up will collect $40,000 and a trophy while the Most Valuable Player in the competition will take home $20,000 and a trophy. The Man-of-the-Final will receive $10,000 and a trophy.
“We would have loved to have all of the first divisions teams in the City participate but we respect everybody’s religion and since Tuesday is a Hindu Holiday, we had to leave out GYO and Everest,” MSC’ Second Vice President Neil Barry informed.
Barry, a former Guyana first-class player said the competition will be played on a knock-out basis with each team mandated to register nine players before the commencement of the tournament from which their six players will be selected for each match.
The bowler’s run-up will be limited to 15 yards while no bowler can bowl more than one over with the Wicketkeeper not allowed to bowl.
The foot fault no-ball rule will be used for a free hit while ‘double scores’ will be given for boundaries that hit or go over the sight screens at the bowlers’ end.
Barry added that the matches will be played with white balls and colored clothes while no more than three fielders will be permitted on the leg-side.
A day of fun and frolic is anticipated for the entire family since in addition to seeing Guyana’s top cricketers battle in the shortest form of the game, Ansa McAl will provide a well stocked bar and one of Guyana’s leading Sound Systems to produce an all-day party for the fans who will be admitted free.
A Bar-B-Q has also been organized for Tuesday as a part of MSC’s Fund Raising drive while an 18-Team Dominoes competition will be held on the top floor of the club.
MSC’s First Vice President Arron Fraser said that the final should conclude just after 17:00hrs and encouraged parents to bring out their children to see what should be entertaining cricket in a holiday atmosphere.
He also disclosed that in Addition to ‘Gold’ sponsor Ansa McAL, Industrial Safety will provide the match balls while the Trophy Stall has donated the trophies.
On a day when Guyanese will celebrate the Hindu Festival of lights to signify the triumph of good over evil, the local cricket stars will hope to light up the event with electrifying cricket as DCC, led by Guyana 20/20 players Chris Barnwell and Derwin Christian aim to retain their title.
Young Warriors should have in their line-up former West Indies under-19 players Gajanand Singh and Richard Ramdeen while GCC will have Guyana’s latest West Indies player Leon Johnson.
The Crandon brothers, Esuan and Royston should be a part of the Rose Hall Town unit while Guyana players Steven Jacobs, Orin Forde and Deon Ferrier should turn out for the home team.
Ansa McAl’s Marketing Assistant Nigel Worrell promised a day filled with excitement for the young, old and in-between. He said Carib is the official Beer of West Indies cricket and reveled that his company is also delighted to sponsor events which bring people together.
“I don’t have much a cricketing background but like most West Indians I am a big cricket fan and I think Sixes is the shortest and most exciting form of the game even now that 20/20 is around.
Sixes is played at the International level and I feel more of this form should be played in Guyana for the pure entertainment purpose.
While Ice cold Carib Beer will be on sale, we cater for families at events like this Sixes Competition and plenty of Smalta will also be available for the kids or those who don’t drink alcohol,” Worrell added.
MSC’s Public Relations Officer Sean Devers chaired yesterday’s launching and thanked the media for attending.
He also said that last year’s crowd was a large one and said that everything is in place to accommodate another large turn out on Tuesday for what promises to be a pulsating day of entertainment at the MSC ground.
It is disgusting that our teachers have to protest in the streets for a…
